Generally, when we think of the oral hygiene of people living in bygone eras, it’s not a very pretty picture that comes to mind. Think decay, tooth loss, discolouration, cavities, etc. The aesthetics of the smile weren’t at the top of people’s minds when there were much more urgent matters of survival at hand.
The focus on having teeth that aren’t simply functional, but also beautiful is a relatively recent one, with modern cosmetic dentistry rooted in the invention of resin cement in the 1980’s. However, throughout history, there have been many developments that led us to where we are at today.
In Ancient Rome, urine was used as a tooth whitener! Believe it or not, the ammonia in urine has some stain-busting properties. However, we don’t blame you if you’d prefer our in-chair whitening treatment to this ancient alternative.
In medieval times, dentistry was performed by barbers. They used to offer teeth-whitening services where they filed down teeth and then coated them with a “whitening” substance. However, this substance often destroyed the tooth’s enamel, thereby killing the tooth.
Tooth replacement has been recorded as far back as 700 B.C., when dentures were made out of ivory, bone, human teeth or animal teeth. There is also evidence of shells being hammered into the gum to replace teeth in Ancient Egypt. Dentures using bone or ivory continued in the middle ages, and they also tried using human teeth from dead bodies to replace their own, but these were most often rejected by the recipient’s body.
In the 1700’s they began using porcelain to create dentures – a material still used in cosmetic dentistry today. However, they also attempted placing metal into the sockets of missing teeth, which was not successful and was rejected by the body.
It wasn’t until the 1900’s that many of the mainstays of today’s cosmetic dentistry were developed. Treatments such as dental veneers, dental implants, composite fillings, dental bonding, dental bridges, dental crowns and teeth whitening have been hugely aided in their development by relatively recent advancements in technology.
We are lucky to live in a time when patients have so many options to safely and successfully improve the appearance of a smile!
