Wisdom teeth extraction in Melbourne

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last teeth to emerge. This generally occurs between the ages of 17 and 25.

Problems can arise with wisdom teeth when there is not enough space in your jaw for them to come through without “impacting” on surrounding teeth, therefore they are called “impacted wisdom teeth”.

Wisdom teeth can either be partially impacted; meaning only some of the tooth has emerged or fully impacted, as it has been unable to break though at all.

Partially and fully impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, damage to your adjacent teeth, their roots, and jawbone. If left, a cyst may develop, which can result in bone and tissue damage that may not be able to be repaired.

Not all wisdom teeth cause problems and not all problems are painful, therefore you may be unaware your wisdom teeth have become impacted. It is not possible to predict when or if impacted wisdom teeth will cause dental problems, however, it is estimated that more than 80% of people will require wisdom tooth removal.

Removing wisdom teeth in late teens or early twenties is easier than in later years where extraction can be more difficult as the roots can be longer and deeper in the jawbone, resulting in a longer healing time, and possibly catalysing the development of periodontal (gum) disease. The general consensus is early extraction is better.

Prior to the commencement of any surgery, cosmetic dentist Dr Birdseye will thoroughly explain the procedure in detail, plus advise on what you can do to make your procedure easier and lessen your recovery time. It is highly recommended you stop smoking, and ensure you have achieved optimum oral health. It is also vital you inform us of any pre-existing illness or current medication you may taking, both prescribed or over the counter.

The ease of your surgery depends on the extent to which your teeth are impacted, their position and length of the roots. After assessing your personal situation, your wisdom teeth may be extracted at our practice under a local anaesthetic or you may require day surgery in hospital under a general anaesthetic. We will discuss the most appropriate solution with you.

After your wisdom teeth are removed, you may experience some post-operative swelling and mild discomfort. Often an over the counter pain relief medication is all that’s needed to make you more comfortable. You may also need to eat a soft food diet for several days.
